Installation Overview: McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) is located on 45,000 acres in southeastern Oklahoma. McAlester and the surrounding area have become the regional center for commerce, retail trade, culture, recreation and heritage for Southeast Oklahoma.

MCAAP has six ammunition production, maintenance, and renovation complexes and is a major ammunition storage site for all branches of the Armed Forces. With nearly 2,300 storage magazines and six million square feet of covered explosive storage space, it is the Defense Department's largest explosive storage facility.

The mission of MCAAP is to provide goods and services to ensure the warfighter is persuasive in peace and invincible in war.​

Location/Driving Directions

Located 85 miles south of Tulsa and 120 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, McAlester is within easy driving distance to major metropolitan areas.

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant is in Southeastern Oklahoma with Highway 69 running north and south and US Highway 270 east and west. The Indian Nation Turnpike also serves the area and Interstate 40 is only 40 miles to the north.

The closest commercial airport is in Tulsa. Tulsa International Airport is 98 miles north of McAlester. Transportation available would be a rental car. Take Broken Arrow Expressway to Muskogee and then Hwy 69 south approximately 60 miles to McAlester; stay on Hwy 69 south for approximately 6 miles take the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant exit.

Will Rogers World Airport located in Oklahoma City is 131 miles west of McAlester. Rental car would be the best means of transportation. Take Interstate 40 east and Indian Nation Turnpike south take the 2nd McAlester exit continue south approximately 1 mile take McAlester Army Ammunition Plant exit.

At McAlester Army Ammunition Plant there are approximately 1968 civilian personnel, 31 military personnel, area veterans, Army Reserve and National Guard

The Lead Organization at MCAAP is the Army Materiel Command (AMC) and the Lead Executing Agencies for Installation is the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Temporary Lodging

There is limited temporary housing available on the installation. Check with MCAAP housing manager for information 918 -420-6480. MWR has cabins located on base that may be rented for temporary housing. There are several motels located outside of MCAAP and in McAlester (approximately 8 miles north).

The lake front cottages at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant are located on the banks of Brown Lake. Features include: Satellite TV, HD Televisions, Wireless Internet, Direct TV, Mini Bar, Fully Furnished, Linens And Towels, Maid Service. No Pets are allowed.

The cost for the cottages are: 2 Bedroom $65.00, 1 Bedroom $60.00. TDY 1&2 Bedroom $70.00 with Visa And Mastercard Accepted.


McAlester Army Ammunition Plant housing was built in the 1960-70's. All units have central HVAC. The housing area has 32 military housing units and is equipped with emergency generator power. If there is excess military housing available, it is rented to DOD civilian employees under Fair Market Value Rates.


Edmond Doyle Elementary School.

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant does not have a school on the installation. MCAAP housing is in the Savanna School District and Savanna's school provides transportation to their school. Persons living on the installation may use other McAlester area schools but no transportation is provided unless child attends the Child and Youth Services (CYS) program.

Required documents needed for enrolling students are shot records, certified birth certificate, child's social security number, documents from previous schools, if available, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with special needs. To enroll in kindergarten, children must be 5 years of age before September 2nd.

Personnel arriving with an exceptional family member should contact the Exceptional Family Member Program coordinator upon arrival. The EFMP is designed to provide assistance to the children and adult depends of eligible military/civilian personnel.

The local Private Christian School, Lakewood Christian School has K-12 classes 918-426-2000.

Eastern State College has an associate program. Eastern also has a campus located in McAlester which offers selected upper level courses from East Central State University Ada, Oklahoma and Southeastern State University Durant, Oklahoma. Child Care

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) has one Child Development Center (CDC) on the plant with a capacity for 43 children. The CDC has a planned curriculum which includes age appropriate activities in all area of development. There are many special activities and events as well as field trips throughout the year.

Those eligible for CYS programs are active duty military personnel, DOD civilian personnel, National Guard and Army Reserve, DOD contractors working on MCAAP, and retired military.

Registration is required for all CYS programs, and there may also be a waiting list for services based on availability. Contact CYS Central Registration at 918-420-6204.

Programs available include full day care for children 6 weeks through 5 years; part-time and hourly services are provided if space is available.

The center is open Monday-Thursday 5:30 am to 5:30 pm. In addition, the center is open on Friday and Saturday when needed to accommodate workforce.

There are no Family Child Care (FCC) homes on McAlester Army Ammunition Plant at this time.

There is one Youth Center on the installation. Hours of Operation are 5:30 A.M. to 5:30 P. M.

Medical Care

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant occupational clinic provides limited outpatient medical services for active duty members, and provides occupational health services and first-aid treatment for civilian employees and contact security guards injured in the line of duty. The clinic is under the direction of Reynolds Army Community Hospital, Fort Sill, in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Active duty service members and their family members (including reservists on active duty) are authorized to use military medical treatment facilities (MFTs). Retirees and their families may also use these facilities if a space is available. Also, you are not limited to the MTF on your post. You can use other installation MTFs, especially if you are traveling. However, during a crisis, military facilities may discontinue services for everyone except active duty members.
