An Associate Curator of Paintings & Sculpture works full time in an art museum overseeing the museum’s collection of paintings and sculptures.

An Associate Curator works with a team of curators and exhibition directors of the various departments in the museum.

Education Needed to Be an Associate Curator of Paintings & Sculpture

Typically, an Associate Curator will at least have a Masters degree in Art History, and will more likely have a Ph.D.

in a specialization of art and be an expert in the field of study.

To work as an Associate Curator of Paintings & Sculpture, one needs to have a strong record of scholarly publication and be a strong public speaker.

Being knowledgeable and passionate in various periods of art and culture, an Associate Curator will also have at least several years of museum work experience.

Duties Required to Be an Associate Curator of Paintings & Sculpture

Besides being highly organized and a multi-tasker, an Associate Curator is also diplomatic and discreet, as dealing with various problems and communicating with a wide range of people such as donors, trustees, museum staff and the public are aspects of the job. Cerebral, articulate, a skilled writer and public speaker are key attributes to being hired.

Duties include researching, documenting, exhibiting, and storing the collection, and participating in the museum’s active schedule of museum exhibitions and traveling exhibitions.

Publication is an integral part of the job, so the Associate Curator must be able to research, write and edit comprehensive texts regarding the collection for both printed catalogues and online textual information. 

An Associate Curator researches and promotes acquisitions for the collection. Facilitating loan requests and outside collection research are other duties for this position.

Skills Required to Be an Associate Curator of Paintings & Sculpture

An Associate Curator is adept with computer programs such as the basic Microsoft Office tools of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus knowing how to utilize a museum database system such as The Museum System (TMS), in addition to social media communications like Twitter and Facebook.
